What you need to do

If you think you have coronavirus:

Only  call 111 if you cannot get help online, stay indoors and avoid close contact with other people. If you cannot get through by phone, please use the link below (it is the same process for both; there is no difference):


To reduce your chances of catching COVID-19 and reduce pressure on Barnard Castle Surgery during this busy time, appointments will be carried out over the phone, via video consultations or by e-consultations unless there is a clinical need for you to come into the practice.

This will help minimise risk while continuing to ensure people get the care and advice they need.

Due to the demand on phone lines you may receive a call from a withheld number. If you have called us, and we have  informed you we will ring you back during the day, then please answer if it shows a number withheld.

Please follow the guidance on the 111 link and do not attend the surgery if you have a new continuous cough or high fever.  The 111 link has been updated and is very useful - we do not know any more than 111  so please do not call the practice for information - use 111 online.

Use econsultations for routine matters that do not necessarily need a face to face appointment.

Order your prescriptions on line - this will help keep the phone lines free for the GPs to call patients.

If you need to order your prescription by telephone, Please dial 01833 690424. The ordering line is open daily from 1.30pm - 5.15pm. Please do not call the appointment line to place your order.

Make sure you have a nominated pharmacy so you do not need to come to the surgery to collect your prescription.

The Dispensary is under a great deal of pressure due to the 'panic ordering' of repeat prescriptions by several hundred patients!  Our staff are working very hard and we have extra staff in to try and deal with the workload

Process for Patients Collecting Medication

  1. Patient arrives at practice and waits at Main Porch to be greeted by a member of Staff.
  2. Staff Member will take your Name and Address and retrieve your medication from within the surgery.
  3. Your medication will be deposited on the Table provided. At this time you will not be required to sign for your medication.
  4. Please ensure you stand back 2 metres from the person in front and the person behind.
  5. If you pay for your medication please have the correct payment ready.
  6. Where possible please can you help by collecting medication for your friends, family and neighbours this helps reduce contact for everyone.

Important information about the coronavirus (COVID-19)

The NHS in the North East and Public Health England (PHE) are well prepared for outbreaks of new infectious diseases. The NHS has put in place measures to ensure the safety of all patients and NHS staff while also ensuring services are available to the public as normal.

The Chief Medical Officer has announced that the country is moving into the ‘Delay’ stage of the response to coronavirus from Friday, 13th March 2020.

The new advice issued by the Chief Medical Officer is as follows:

Stay at home for 7 days if you have either:

  • a high temperature
  • a new continuous cough

Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital.

You do not need to contact 111 to tell them you're staying at home.

Use the NHS 111 online coronavirus service if:

  • you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home
  • your condition gets worse
  • your symptoms do not get better after 7 days

Only call 111 if you cannot get help online.

Everyone is being reminded to follow Public Health England advice to:

  • Always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Then bin the tissue, and wash your hands, or use a sanitiser gel.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after using public transport. Use a sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are unwell.
